Ubuntu Linux kernel 4.17 installation guide

This installation guide describes how to install Linux Kernel 4.17 on Ubuntu Linux. This works with the latest version of Ubuntu Linux and most Ubuntu-based distributions including Kubuntu and Mint.

The included kernel files have been compiled using the generic Ubuntu configuration. A low latency version is also available in the directory of the linked files.

The files can be found at kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.17/

Installation Guide (GUI)

Download the kernel headers package:

linux-headers-4.17.0-041700_4.17.0-041700.201806032231_all.deb
And the appropriate headers package for your system (choose yours)
- AMD64:
  
  linux-headers-4.17.0-041700-generic_4.17.0-041700.201806032231_amd64.deb
- i386:
  
  linux-headers-4.17.0-041700-generic_4.17.0-041700.201806032231_i386.deb
- ARMHF:
- ARM64:
And the kernel image (choose yours)
- AMD64:
  
  linux-image-unsigned-4.17.0-041700-generic_4.17.0-041700.201806032231_amd64.deb
- i386:
  
  linux-image-4.17.0-041700-generic_4.17.0-041700.201806032231_i386.deb
Install the files in the same order as downloaded above. So first install the headers (generic and CPU) and finally the image (1 file).
In the terminal run:

sudo update-grub
Reboot and select the kernel from the bootloader menu

TPM firmware upgrade

Windows 1803 reports outdated TPM firmware versions, including on the TPM 2 module I had from Asus (TPM-M R2.0) (containing the Infinite 9665 chipset).
This get rid of the error/warning you have to upgrade the firmware of the TPM chip. This is quite difficult and requires some fiddling.
The security warning is defined as ADV170012 | Vulnerability in TPM could allow Security Feature Bypass

Disable bitlocker in Windows
Reboot the PC and open the BIOS
Next step is to disable TPM in the bios
Reboot again and start Windows
Download and unpack the following package: ftp://ftp.supermicro.com/driver/TPM/9655FW%20update%20package_1.4.zip
Run DOS as administrator (cmd.exe)

cd Firmware TPMFactoryUpd.exe -update config-file -config TPM20_latest.cfg pause

Reboot the system
Open the bios and enable TPM
Reset the TPM key
Reboot
Start Windows

iTunes error 42110

To fix Apple iTunes error -42110 on Windows;

close iTunes
delete the directory C:\ProgramData\Apple Computer\iTunes\SC Info\
Restart iTunes
